The Aerial Tram made its last summer run on September 8, earlier than in a normal year, so crews could replace its haul rope and overhaul the carriage. Palisades Tahoe has scheduled Opening Day for Wednesday, November 25, weather and conditions permitting. That leaves 78 days with the valley's best-known lift out of service, and as of today, 52 of them remain.
The Village calendar for those weeks looks like scattered shoulder-season events, but it follows a pattern. The Made in Tahoe Fall Festival, Thanksgiving dinner at Olympic House and the FORGED induction at Tram Plaza all list the same address, 1960 Olympic Valley Road. This fall, Olympic Valley's events cluster around the base of the Tram while the lift itself is rebuilt.
In late July, the resort said the early closure was for three jobs: a new haul rope, which is the center cable; a carriage overhaul; and possibly new hangers for both cabins. By the September 8 season preview, the hangers were no longer listed as possible. The resort said new hanger arms were being installed and described them this way:
"the large silver structures connecting each cabin to the haul ropes"
The same post says crews are working with experts from Garaventa, the Tram's manufacturer, to replace the haul ropes. The resort hasn't given a return date for the Tram. The preview only says riders "may notice some new hardware above the iconic cabins this winter," and the live Hours of Operation page lists Aerial Tram rides as closed for the season. Opening Day on November 25 is the date for the resort as a whole. No source ties the Tram's return to that date.
The Tram is the most visible project, but it isn't the only lift that has been taken apart this year. In late July, the resort said crews were using a crane to remove large components from Funitel Tower 4 so they could be fully disassembled, inspected and rebuilt. Tower 5 was planned next, then a gearbox replacement in the lower terminal. The resort hasn't announced that this work is finished. The newest post in its operations archive is still the July 29 update.
The Base to Base Gondola is getting its annual maintenance. Crews are servicing cabins, lifting the rope, testing tower parts and checking every fastener along the 2.4-mile line, along with servicing the drive, tensioning systems, brakes and sensors in each terminal.
The snowmaking work has the closest link to Opening Day. The resort's summer list included 2,200 feet of new pipe and new fan guns from Mombo Meadows to Riviera, plus upgrades on Exhibition near the mid-station. The September preview added expanded snowmaking along Mountain Run, one of the main routes from the upper mountain to the Palisades base area. The resort says this will support top-to-bottom skiing and riding in the early season and help hold coverage later into spring. Moonshine Ink ran the Mountain Run upgrade in its September 11 roundup, based on the resort's press release. Neither source gives a start date for snowmaking.
Mountain Run ends at the Palisades base, the same area where the Tram loads. Most of the fall's visible work ends up at the same place the calendar keeps returning to.
Oktoberfest, the Village's 19th annual, took place on September 26 with a new VIP lounge. Here is what's left on the published calendar:
The vendor list for Made in Tahoe draws heavily on businesses from around the region. Advertised vendors include Alpenglow Expeditions, Magpie Vintage and Truckee Hot Sauce Company. Food comes from MOGROG Rotisserie and Morelos Tacos. Proceeds from the festival bar go to the Tahoe Truckee School of Music.
MOGROG Rotisserie is also on the Mountainfilm on Tour listing a week later, selling food at the Olympic Village Event Center. So the same local vendor feeds the valley's two biggest October events, one at The Village and one at Chamonix Place.
Everline's October calendar runs the Shirley Canyon guided hikes every Wednesday through Halloween. Everline's homepage also lists a refreshed fall menu at Six Peaks Grille and a new pub menu at Sandy's Pub. Those pages aren't dated, so check before you go.
In The Village, Uncorked isn't new this season, but its wine list keeps changing. A September 3 Village profile names owners Chris and Kelsey Barkman and says the by-the-glass menu changes twice a month. That means about four different lists between now and Opening Day.
FORGED is the clearest example of the calendar returning to the Tram. Palisades describes it as an annual celebration of "the athletes, coaches, families, mentors, and community members" who shaped the mountain. New names are added to the tribute at Tram Plaza on November 28, three days after Opening Day. The season preview calls FORGED a monument and says the celebration continues at Bar One after the ceremony. The induction takes place under the cabins that have been closed since September 8 for new ropes and hanger arms, and it marks the end of the fall calendar.
From there the base area switches to winter. The KT Bass Bar Music Series at the base of KT-22 has scheduled 52 days of live DJs this season, with upgraded sound and lighting. Households with a beginner have a new option. The $799 Beginner Progression Pass includes three group lessons, plus lift tickets and rentals on each lesson day and a pair of goggles. Finishing all three lessons earns a season pass good for the rest of the winter. Quantities are limited and there are no blackout dates.
If you have family coming for Thanksgiving week, Opening Day, the Olympic House dinner and FORGED fall within four days of each other, all close to the same plaza.
If you're thinking about how a home near the Palisades base fits your winter plans, including how close it is to the Tram, Mountain Run and The Village, Lindsay Buchanan can talk it through with you in person or by video before the first chair runs on November 25.
