The through-line for August is not what to do this weekend. It is that the West Shore you knew last summer is quietly rearranging itself, and the calendar this month is the clearest place to see it.

The Concours turns 52, Sunnyside closes a 39-year chapter, and Homewood spends the summer pouring the foundations for a gondola. All in a six-mile stretch of West Lake Boulevard.

The Concours Returns To The Place That Built It

The Lake Tahoe Concours d'Elegance runs August 7 and 8 at Obexer's Boat Company in Homewood, marking its 52nd anniversary. This year's featured marque is Riva, which brings a run of Italian wooden speedboats into a show already known for Chris-Crafts, Gar Woods, and Hacker-Crafts polished to museum standard. The event is presented by the Tahoe Yacht Club Foundation, with a portion of pass proceeds directed back into Lake Tahoe community programs.

For residents, the practical detail is the venue. Obexer's is described by the show's own organizers as the birthplace of wooden boating on Lake Tahoe, and the Concours has landed there permanently after cycling through four marinas over the decades. That matters because it changes the traffic pattern on West Lake Boulevard for the weekend. Parking near Homewood fills early, and organizers advise arriving before 9 a.m. on Saturday for the shoreline display. The menu is still built around New American fare with local seafood, steaks, and the handcrafted cocktail list that has anchored the après-ski scene on West Lake Boulevard for decades. The deck, which OpenTable's listing calls Tahoe's largest lakeside deck, is still open for lunch and dinner daily, with live music on summer evenings.

The interpretive question, and one worth asking over dinner, is what "new stewardship" means for a property whose identity has been braided into a single operator for four decades. New ownership at legacy West Shore restaurants has gone both ways historically. Some transitions preserve the room and update the kitchen. Others reset the concept entirely. Nobody outside the deal knows yet which one this will be, which is precisely why this August has a different weight than last August did.

A Gondola Being Built In Real Time

Five miles south, the third transition is physical. Homewood Mountain Resort is spending this summer actively constructing its new gondola, which replaces the 1966 Madden Chair and is targeted to open in December for the 2026–27 ski season.
